Microsoft and Google may be going head-to-head in the fight to control the realm of online advertising.
According to the Wall Street Journal the online advertising market is roughly a $15 billion industry and could grow to $150 billion by 2015. Now Microsoft wants to challenge Google's domination of the market.
Microsoft is now creating software that packages personal web-based services such as personalized home pages, web email, IM and virus scanning. The personal version is called Windows Live and the business version is Office Live. Most of these new "web-based" services will be free to the users.
The key word here is "web-based".
Microsoft is banking on the fact that users will use this "web-based" software A LOT. If Microsoft's plan plays out every PC will have the software and we will use it for all of our common web functions.
Microsoft will then sell ads space and will be able to match the ads to the interests and web activities of the users.
We just may be one step closer to reaching that $150 billion mark.
