Shhhhhh Walmart is Moving In

What an amazing oxymoron. Walmart, the largest retailer in the world may be planning to build a site next door but you wouldn't know it.

Memphis, Tennessee is the home of several Walmarts and they continue to build more; or are they?

Even City officials seem to jump on the "vague" bandwagon as in the case of a possible new Walmart in North Memphis. In November, the Commercial Appeal reported that Robert Lipscomb, chief financial officer for the City of Memphis, said Wal-Mart has been interested in the site for some time and that he has spoken with company officials about a possible move a handful of times. "They could become a new anchor tenant for the mall," said Lipscomb.
A spokesman with Simon Property Group, which owns Raleigh Springs and Oak Court malls, declined to say if Simon has been working with Wal-Mart.

Is it the opposition? Is it their plan to slip in under the radar before the whine-bags with too much time on their hands start picketing?

On Monday of this week a large brigade of earth-moving equipment descended on a large site in Oakland, Tennessee. No signage, no fanfare, no yellow smiley faces heralding the low prices, just a lot of rumors and local chatter about whether or not this could be the Big One, a new Walmart.

For now we wait outside of the "veil" of secrecy, all the while hoping our commercial land "just down the street" was a good purchase. Shhhhh Walmart may be moving in.

My family has had ties with Raleigh for almost 60 years. My mother grew up in Raleigh, on Cela Rd. My wife and I moved into Raleigh 13 years ago. I remember as a boy, going to the Raleigh Mall, and the organ people (London Paris in particular) constantly hounding my mother to let them give us lessons.

My wife and I still love going to Sears and the Malco Theater at the mall. We were very disheartened when the JCPenny Outlet closed.

I've heard rumors that Walmart has now bought the mall from Simon. Are these rumors true? If so, has anything been said about when we will start to see some life pumped back into the place.

My personal opinion is that the Raleigh Mall would make a much better factory outlet mall than the Belz mall ever has.
